Bexley Accessible Transport Scheme (BATS) have developed a ‘Car Club 2.0’, providing low cost, discreet, door to door transport for older people.
An older person can book a BAT car to collect them for an appointment, shopping or outing. They can pay themselves, or use their personal budget to pay for the service.
Although BAT maintain the fleet of accessible cars and tracking devices, the ‘taxi’ service is staffed by volunteers. The volunteers get training in disability awareness, first-aid, local services and how to handle the cars before they start. They can also ‘bank’ their hours in a timebank to be used by a nominated family, friend or neighbour to access the service.
