Backed by Age UK Cheshire East, the organisation has set up a ‘page’ (or Doorstep) for each neighbourhood in the area with a high proportion of elderly people. The page lists events and information, but is explicitly designed to encourage local people to have online conversations.
Younger older’ people – ‘silver surfers’ – will be involved in hosting local pages, as well as acting as buddies for those who have never used social media before. AgeUK Cheshire East is also providing tablets and internet connections for some isolated older people in the area who do not have the facilities to engage online at the moment.
The pilot is underway now. Learning from the pilot will be shared across the AgeUK network.
