Theatre for those with dementia

AgeuklogoThe Dukes Theatre and Age UK Lancashire have begun hosting a programme of films, theatre events and arts participation opportunities, open to the general public, but specifically adapted for older people with dementia and their family members. For example, internal signage is often adapted to be clearer (eg signs for toilets), ushers are given dementia training before the event and sometimes special transport is arranged to make it easier for rural residents to attend.

This idea came directly from older people involved in a previous Age UK Lancashire initiative, Linking Communities. They found a common frustration of friends and family of those with dementia was that they could no longer enjoy some social outings because the venue or event confused or frustrated the person with dementia.
